What is Biomimicry?

Nature has been evolving for the past 4 billion years, starting from the very first organism that appeared on Earth. Through this evolution, nature has optimized its various functions and mechanisms to maximize efficiency. Much of these functions are exactly what human-made technology does, but nature executes them more effectively while operating within limitations, allowing for other organisms to thrive.

Biomimicry is not taking or using nature, like in bio-utilization or biophilic designs. Instead, it is a tool used to create more sustainable and efficient technology, designs, and strategies by taking inspiration from nature.

There are 3 elements: Emulate, Ethos, and (Re)Connect

Emulate:

Examine nature, study these biological models, and structure similar mechanisms into technology. This provides a novel way to approach a problem, resulting in more effective and efficient innovations

Ethos:

What are our intentions, ethics, and principles behind practicing biomimicry? Innovations must contribute to supporting life — nature and human — and staying within Earth’s limits

(Re)Connect:

With elegant designs inspired by nature, biomimicry reconnects ourselves back to the environment and life of Earth. It also reconnects the field of biology with engineering, business, and society.
